Warrensburg junior Tanner Karnes takes down Matthew Knopp, Platte County in the semifinals of the Class 3 District 4 285 lbs. division Saturday at Winnetonka High School.

WARRENSBURG — No other Warrensburg team may feel the impact of changing conferences quite like the Tigers wrestling program.

With the move to the Missouri River Valley Conference, Warrensburg, who is coming off a West Central Conference championship in 2017, will square off with powerhouse programs night in and night out.

“The MRVC is a wrestling conference,” Warrensburg coach Jeff Brown said.

Brown would know, after wrestling in the conference in high school for Knob Noster then coaching for seven years at Odessa.

“You have to be on your A-game every time,” Brown said. “They are just at another level than what we are used to conference-wise. This team is going to see a new level of wrestling that we are going have to work towards to compete with those guys.”

Warrensburg returns two state qualifiers from a season ago in seniors Tanner Karnes and Josh Tomich as well as senior Colby Benge, who went to state as a sophomore.

“I’ve got a handful of guys who have a shot at doing something down at the state tournament,” Brown said.

Karnes competed on the national stage over the summer and is hoping to make a deep run in the state tournament again.

“I am going for the number one spot,” Karnes said. “A long football season means I am coming in a little late, but that doesn’t stop my work ethic.”

Warrensburg also added a girls wrestling program this season. Missouri is the ninth state to add girls wrestling as a sport and will have a seperate district and state tournament for the girls wrestlers.

“We have three girls that are out,” Brown said. “I think it is an exciting opportunity for the girls to compete against each other instead of having to wrestle the boys.”
