A core of six seniors highlights the Warrensburg Lady Tigers volleyball roster this season.
The Lady Tigers will look to Ashtyn Bevans, Sarah Dudley, Makaylan Misner, Ali Rodriguez, Hannah Schierenbeck and Jenna Weyrauch for senior leadership.
”Having six seniors come back is wonderful,” Warrensburg coach Trudy Fleeman said. “They set the tone for practice and our season.”
Warrensburg returns key passers and setters in 2018 but must fill the hitting roles left from last season’s graduating class.
The Lady Tigers graduated seniors Carly Russell, Hannah Summit, Jenna Eckerman and Makenzy Mizera last season.
“Those girls led by example,” Fleeman said.
The Lady Tigers went 24-8 in 2017 seeing their season end in the district finals to new conference opponent Pleasant Hill.
“We return a couple of hitters, but that is one thing we will be working on is filling those spots,” Fleeman said. She praised her team for the work it put in over the summer to prepare for the season.
“Just working on cleaning up some things on our offense and our defense,” Fleeman said. “We have some big shoes to fill. We lost a few big hitters last year and just hoping girls step up and fill those spots.”
While filling the hitting spots are in the works, Fleeman returns other key roles from last season.
“I think a big strength will be our passing and our setting,” she said.
Misner will be a key setter for the Lady Tigers this season.
“She is a tremendous athlete who gives everything she has on every single play,” Fleeman said.
Bevins and Dudley will be on the back row for Warrensburg this season.
”They are our steady go-to girls in the back row,” Fleeman said. “So that will be a big contribution.”
The Lady Tigers will rely on Rodriguez to be an outside hitter for the new season.
Warrensburg will look to Schierenbeck and Weyrauch — both have been on varsity since their sophomore seasons — to lead the hitting efforts.
“I think we want to go in and make a name for ourselves,” Fleeman said. “We want to earn everyone’s respect.”
Warrensburg enters the 2018 season joining the Missouri River Valley West Conference.
The conference features Excelsior Springs, Harrisonville, Grain Valley, Oak Grove, Odessa and Pleasant Hill.
Fleeman said the nice thing is that the Lady Tigers have seen these teams in the past, seeing Oak Grove and Pleasant Hill in the district tournament last year.
“Going into this conference, I do not feel like we are brand new. We know what we are getting into at least,” Fleeman said.
Warrensburg will open the season with a non-conference match at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27, on the road at Versailles.
