A year after taking second place in Class 3, the Warrensburg boys cross country team will be looking to fill in the pieces around senior Colton Palmer.

“We have a nice group of seniors and juniors that should provide some really nice leadership,” Warrensburg cross country coach Kacy Stuber said. “We will be a little young on both sides, so I am looking forward to seeing those kids improve as we go through.”

Palmer and senior Dakota Carley are the returning runners from last year’s state-runner up squad that featured state champion Marquette Wilhite. The then-junior took fourth in Class 3 and has only one competitor — Maxwell McDaniel, Festus — returning ahead of him.

“We expect some big things from Colton,” Stuber said. “He really brings up the people around him.”

Carley finished 63rd in Class 3 a season ago.

Juniors Tim Richner and Josh Cymer spent 2017 on the fringe of the varsity unit, but will now be a key part in keeping the Tigers competitive as they head into the Missouri River Valley Conference West.

“We have some big expectations going into the new conference and being able to be competitive,” Stuber said.

The Warrensburg boys squad won the conference, district and sectional meets en route to the state meet.

On the girls side, the Lady Tigers return state qualifiers senior April Holland and sophomore Tabby Boldt.

“We’ve got a really nice core of girls returning from both track and cross country,” Stuber said.

Boldt raced onto the scene last season for Warrensburg, taking 18th in her first state meet appearance, while the seasoned Holland took 55th in her third trip to state.

“April is going to be a leader that we look to,” Stuber said.

Senior Hannah Schierenbeck is a newcomer to the cross country program, splitting time between it and the Warrensburg volleyball team.
