Warrensburg junior Sadie Misner makes a pass in the Warrensburg Jamboree Tuesday, Nov. 13.

WARRENSBURG — The Warrensburg girls basketball team is looking to continue grow in the second year of head coach Valerie Stambersky.

“With last year being the first year and us being up and down and all over the place, my expectations were a lot higher coming into this year,” Stambersky said. “They have an idea of the expectations, they have an idea of defensive philosophy and just doing those little things. It has been easier, not having to teach everything over from scratch.”

The Lady Tigers went 7-18 last season. Warrensburg won its season opening game 50-40 over Holden.

“I think this group is capable of doing far more than what we saw tonight,” Stambersky said. “I think we played a good first game, but we have a lot of stuff to improve upon.”

Warrensburg will be led by junior guard Sadie Misner. In her sophomore season, Misner averaged 17.5 points per game.

“I want her to have fun,” Stambersky said. “She is going to be the focal point and she is going to draw a lot of attention, but the players around her are better this year. I just want her to go out and play loose and have fun. She is going to continue to get what she gets. She is a hard player to guard.”

Courtney Willie, Cora Perry and Zoey Westphal fill out the guard group for the Lady Tigers while twins Paige and Brandi VanBlaricum and Bailey Tucker make up the post group.

Tucker came on strong last season and scored eight point in the team’s opener against the Lady Eagles.

“She just does a great job on the boards and utilizes her height inside, we are not going to see a lot of people who will be capable to defend our bigs inside,” Stambersky said.

Warrensburg moves to the Missouri River Valley Conference West division this season,

“I don’t know what to expect and part of me likes that,” Stambersky said on the conference change. “It’s one of those things that I am going to focus more on what our expectations are.”
