Donald Wilbur Smarr, age 94, of Warrensburg, passed away Sunday, June 9, 2019, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Warrensburg. Donald was born on Oct. 29, 1924, at the family farm North of Warrensburg. He was the son of Kenneth and Opal Higgins Smarr.

Donald was a lifetime member of the First Christian Church in Warrensburg where he served as a Deacon and Elder. He was a charter member of the Forty Niners Sunday School Class.

He graduated from Warrensburg High School in 1943. He served in the US Merchant Marines from 1945 to 1946 receiving a Honorable Discharge.

On Sept. 3, 1949, at the First Christian Church, he married Martha Nell Gibson, of Batesville, Arkansas. The union was blessed with five children, Donna (Larry) Stelling, of Cole Camp, Rex (Adrienne) Smarr, of Warrensburg, Deborah (Charles) Files of Cameron, Kenneth (Susan) Smarr, of Chilhowee, and Diane (Randy) Corbett of Knob Noster; 18 grandchildren and 28 greatgrandchildren.

In early years, he worked with his father at Smarr Motors in Warrensburg selling machinery and Studebaker automobiles. After selling the business, he worked as the manager of the MFA Producers Exchange in Warrensburg and Centerview until his retirement. He was a lifelong cattle farmer and spent his retirement days hunting, traveling, and spending time with his grandchildren. He always enjoyed a good game of cards or an evening of dancing and enjoying the outdoors .

While raising his family, he enjoyed the recreational activities at the family cabin at the Lake of the Ozarks. Besides fishing, he loved to water ski; a love all his children enjoyed as well. While doing so one day he even lost his partials in the lake! He was a member of the Mule Train and a life long supporter of UCM athletics.

He remained a member of 72 years of the Elks Lodge in Warrensburg and served as a Director of the United Missouri Bank from 1985 to 2010. He was also a member of the Missouri Cattlemens Association.

Donald is survived by: his wife, Martha Smarr, of Warrensburg; his children, Donna (Larry) Stelling, of Cole Camp, Rex (Adrienne) Smarr, of Warrensburg, Deborah (Charles) Files, of Cameron, Kenneth (Susan) Smarr, of Chilhowee, and Diane (Randy) Corbett, of Knob Noster; 18 grandchildren; and 28 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; a brother, William; and a sister, Rose Jean Collins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 14, at the First Christian Church in Warrensburg.

Interment will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Kelly J. Stelling, Cameron J. Stelling, Neil D. Stelling, Ryan M. Smarr, Darin M. Smarr, Kevin D. Smarr, David T. Smarr, Jeffrey P. Files, John C. Files, Byron W. Smarr, and Levi D. Corbett.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time, Friday at the church.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Christian Church Organ Fund or the Johnson County Cancer Foundation and can be left in care of Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home.

Donalds casket was handcrafted by Jesse Goodrich, who is married to his granddaughter Jennifer. As published in the Daily Star Journal.
