Robert Larry Jones, 71, Warrensburg, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, June 26, 2019, at Western Missouri Medical Center.
He was born July 5, 1947, in Columbia, Missouri, the son of Robert Louis and Elizabeth Suzanne (Beck) Jones.
Robert attended school in Centralia, Missouri, graduating from Centralia High School in 1965. He attended Linn Technical School in Linn, Missouri, before joining the U.S. Army in 1966. He served in Korea as an Engineer, building panel bridges at the DMZ and was also there in 1968 during the Pueblo incident.
After the U.S. Army, he installed telephone equipment in the Northwest, before returning to Missouri and meeting his wife, Becky. They married Sept. 4, 1971, in Belton, Missouri.
The family moved to Warrensburg in 1983, where Robert was a Network Engineer with Sprint. He was passionate about his work in maintaining the telephony and 911 systems for Central Missouri. In December 2012, Robert retired from CenturyLink after 43 years of service.
After retirement, he became active with the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. Robert proudly served as a member of the joint Honor Guard and volunteered many hours at the American Legion. In 2014, he became the junior vice commander of the William A. Carleton VFW Post 2513. He then served as senior vice commander from 2015-2018, helping lead the post through a series of changes that led to it being an All-State Post two years in a row and headed for All-American post in 2018. He was installed as post commander in April, 2019, and was looking forward to the next year.
Robert always had a joke to tell, and you never knew if he was kidding or not. He always had a smile and a soft spot for his children and especially for his grandchildren. He was always available to help a veteran in need, whether it was for a ride to a doctors appointment or a little cash to get a tank of gas. He helped every year with the VFW Buddy Poppy fundraisers, helping to raise more than $5,000 during his time with the VFW.
Robert was never far from his furbabies, Ace and Ava, who were his constant companions. During the summers, Robert would take Sarah, Matt, and Adam to the dirt track and drag races. He and Adam often played with remote controlled cars. They could also be found shooting off rockets into space. He especially loved bringing his granddaughter Tamera to live music shows at the Lake of the Ozarks.
Robert never met a stranger, and everyone who met him became his friend. He will be greatly missed by his family and veteran friends.
Robert is survived by his wife, Becky, of the home; his children, Matthew Jones of Sedalia, Missouri; Adam (Renee) Jones of Rancho Mission Viejo, California; and Sarah Jones of Blue Springs, Missouri; two granddaughters, Tamera Reed and Olivia Jones; and a sister, Sue Ellen Van Horn of West Plains, Missouri.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, July 1, 2019, at Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home.
Inurnment will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 2, 2019, at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville with full military honors provided by his friends with Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2513 and the American Legion Post 131 joint honor guard.
