This Saturday the Mules will host the Washburn Ichabods in a MIAA matchup, starting at 1:30 p.m.
The No. 25 Ichabods come in after suffering an upset last week on the road at Fort Hays State by a 17-7 margin. The suprising thing is that loss came just one week after Washburn defeated FCS member Missouri State in Springfield by a 35-27 score.
"I think we are going to have their full attention and full focus," Mules' head coach Willie Fritz said. "They beat Missouri State and they felt pretty good about how things were going. I am sure Fort Hays opened their eyes up and we are obviously going to get their best effort."
They are led on offense by running back Brandon Walker, who averages 81.3 yards per game, and first-year quarterback Jake Iverson, who throws for 227.3 yards per outing. Joe Hastings and Brad Cole lead the squad in catches. Iverson completes only 41 percent of his passes though, and the offense averages 23 points a game.
"He is a very explosive player," Fritz said of Walker. "They have a very good offensive line. They have a lot of talent."
The defense is one of the most stingy in Division II. Linebackers Zach Watkins, Michael Wilhoite, Bruce Ringwood, and Michael Krajicek are among the team leaders in tackles while holding opponents to only 15.7 points and 282 yards per game.
The Mules are 49-5 since the 2001 season when they have outgained their opponents on the ground versus a 9-17 mark when they have been outrushed by their opponents. UCM out-rushed Truman, last week, 135-3. The Bulldogs were limited to only three total yards on 23 attempts.
Glenn Milner has scored seven touchdowns (four rushing, three receiving) this season to lead theMules offense. He has also compiled two consecutive 100-yard rushing games, giving him eight for his care er.
He also moved up several career charts, including career touchdowns (26) and rushing touchdowns (22). He is the highest scoring two-year player in school history, passing Todd Devoe last week, and he still has at least eight more games this year (on page 7).
Milner scored his 22nd career rushing score to move into sixth all-time.
He needs only two more to tie Dane Henningsen (1974-77) on the list. UCM contributed to this story.
