Warrensburg - The 24-hour Amateur Radio Club's field day - from 1 p.m. Saturday to 1 p.m. Sunday - drew about two dozen people to Knob Noster State Park's Clearfork Lake area.

Brandon Sisco, 14, Warrensburg, says he likes to help get the event ready.

"I like to help set up the tower. I like working with tools," he says.

Sisco's father, Steve Sisco, explains field day's purpose while piecing together a pole antenna.

"It's for radio operators all over the county to get out and set up their equipment and see how they operate in case of an emergency," he said.

When other communication systems fail, ham radios do not, something Jeff Miller, Chilhowee, says he learned first hand a few years ago.

"I'm a storm spotter and I didn't have my radio, and I spotted a funnel. I had my cell phone, but it didn't work. That's the (tornado) that hit Warrensburg about four years ago," he says.

Samantha Raihla, 15, Warrensburg, says she has been involved with ham radio since infancy and plans to participate in reaching other hams around the globe during the all-day session. She says she once reached someone in Australia.

"I enjoy talking with all the people and making contacts all over the world," she says.
